I wish I could update my web site right now, but the only internet access I can get here in Delhi is on the intranet. Makes me think that what I need is a sort of reverse VPN, that lets me connect out through the firewall and put my laptop on the internet. I wonder if such a thing exists?

Travelling again - today I fly to India, so new postings will probably be delayed...

Cure for depression: I went on to Amazon to check out a book recommended by GMSV, and by the time I reached the end of the customer reviews I found my depression had lifted and I was indeed an aching, laughing wreck on the floor. The companion volume offered by Amazon also lets you read some sample pages, just to get a grip on the writing style.

Google is, of course, the Worlds Favourite Search-engine. But just a glance at the new look for their automated news gathering service tells you the business they are about to move in on. Up until now they have been taking out soft targets, but aiming at the News Moguls, especially using their own material, is sure to lead to trouble. Having said that, Google News is now my home page.

Just in case anyone cares, you can hear a recording me speaking on C|Net radio last Wednesday - the topic was standards and open source, and these links usually last a week or so. Spot the Webmink plug :-)

Better Pictures With Your CompactA week or so back I discovered with some surprise that independent publishers can get their titles stocked by Amazon (at least in the UK) with no fuss at all. So we went for a dig through my father's back catalogue and found stock of a nice little photo book he published back in 1987, "Better Pictures With Your Compact", which is still a good buy even now (especially as it is still at the 1987 price, £3.95. Anyway, as well as being available on Susanna's shop, it's now in stock at Amazon too!

Data plate for Sun-1 serial 15Small historical education for me this week at Sun NetWork: The name SunONE has been used before. Currently the name of Sun's "vision, architecture, products and services for delivering Web services on demand", it was also the name of the original Sun Workstation - this picture show's the serial plate of the earliest surviving model, on display this week in San Francisco (serial number 15 - number 16 was the first one shipped to a customer).
