Wishing I was in San Francisco
It's seeing events like tonight's reading by Bruce Sterling on The Singularity: Your Life As A Black Hole that makes me wish I lived somewhere near San Francisco.
His talk will look at the notion of the "Singularity" -- a point in the (potentially very near) future where technological and social change happen so quickly and so profoundly that it's impossible to understand, let alone predict, what life would be like. Once we hit the Singularity, all bets are off.
Quite mind-blowing, like much of the stuff from the Long Now Foundation (there's a review of the book about their clock on my Books Page).

Update: Jim has a review and I still wish I could have gone :-)

Comments:

Sorry you couldn't make it, Simon. :) I live in San Francisco, so for me it was just a few minutes up the street. Thanks so much for alerting me to this speech, though. I found the talk really interesting. I wrote some thoughts at: http://blogs.sun.com/jimgris
