Devastation
Using the images from DigitalGlobe, I've built an animation that shows the shocking, apocalyptic effect of the tsunami on Banda Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra. Click for a larger, slower version (1.4Mb).

I am shocked by the way 50% of the land has gone and none of the buildings are standing. I sit and try to imagine the area I live reduced like this and it is awe-ful.

There's a PDF put together by DigitalGlobe that further conveys the appalling damage. [Thanks, Noel]

Comments:

Despite the obvious effort you put into creating these animations, it appears as though you were not successful at exactly matching the features of the bridges and coastlines in the before and after images. An American college student, although he did not create an animation as you did created a hi-res composite of the before and after images and managed to successfully match up every major feature in the images. He also created an infrared composite image which very clearly shows what remains of the harbor in the wake of the Tsunami. He did this not just for the images you used but for 2 other sets of images as well.

Thanks for the pointer. Yes, I had a lot of trouble fitting the images together as they are taken from different positions and at different magnification so scaling and stretching the pictures to match didn't completely work out.

Hey -- wow, incredible image. It really helps me get a sense of scale for this tragedy... thank you for your efforts, and for sharing.
