Time for Plan B?
Note to self: there is no such thing as a 'defensive patent', only an offensive patent waiting to be sold by auction. My non-expert eye suggests this patent sale is really bad news for WS-* web services - I wonder if the bundle of patents also affect "RESTian" web services?

Faster Than A Speeding Bullet
Seems Astronomy Picture of the Day is puzzling over a strange picture. No mystery; it's just me arriving in Australia...

Christmas in NZ
On my way to speak at the Evolve conference in Brisbane, I stopped briefly in Auckland for a business meeting. I like Auckland - it feels very live-able and I find most of the local people I meet so friendly and living such a rich life.

One of the interesting topics I heard discussed is Christmas. While us northern-hemisphere types associate it with cold weather and warm fires, Kiwis associate it with hot weather and hot fires (under the barbeque) as well as lazing on the beach. Consequently it's amusing the way that everything is still dressed in red, green and snow (see the Sky Tower to the right for example - it's normally like this) and there are merry songs everywhere begging it to snow, snow, snow. It's all as correct as a fair-haired 'baby Jesus' figure I suppose...

Given a Voice
Hey world - 95 million people just got the chance to use an office suite in their own language! The release of Jambo OpenOffice 1.0 gives a voice to Swahili speakers across the world. Way to go! Next thing they need is Telecentres like they have in Brazil.
