It's not just people who steal software who have to worry - when you buy a Microsoft product, you're buying a lifetime of fear of audit and legal persecution. So says the new recruitment campaign by OpenOffice.org, "Get Legal - Get OpenOffice.org", launched today. Will it work?

I dunno ... I think enterprise IT managers live with a healthy fear of a call from M$ account managers or lawyers. What behaviour do you think would most likely result in such a call - buying more M$ software, or buying less?

Segue to tongue-in-cheek discussion of M$ licenses as a protection racket. Segue to that student-led anti-Mafia campaign in Italy recently - "buy from Mafia-free stores", they said.

Maybe the openoffice community should focus negative attention on vendors of products and services who are tainted by Microsoft software in their operations chain. There's good opportunity here: do you really want to do business with a vendor with pitiful (Microsoft) controls on your private financial data?
