Languages that Compile to Java
As I've been saying for five years now, what matters about Java is that you end up with portable binary components - the language is cool but less significant. This site lists all the known languages that can be compiled to platform independent Java bytecodes, as well as interpreters, pre-processors and other stuff.

SlashDot
The only place to go for open source community news of every sort. Full of attitude of all colours

Resources

Alexa search bar
I find a built-in search bar really useful in my web browser. If you'd like to get Amazon book recommendations when you use the 'related sites' feature, try this one from Alexa - it's Google powered too so the search is first-rate.
SpamGourmet
This service offers anti-spam e-mail forwarding; you can make up your own disposable addresses that only work a limited number of times. For example, if you're one of the first three to send e-mail to website-test.3.webmink@spamgourmet.com I will receive it, all subsequent mail to that address will get vaped.
CafePress
So you have a great idea for a t-shirt or mug and would like to see it made real? CafePress will make it and send it to you, or even create an online shop so that other people can buy your design.
PayPal
Need to send someone some money? Want to sell things but avoid having to accept credit cards yourselves? PayPal works, and it's free for low-volume use.
AmazingMail
I use AmazingMail to send my photos to friends and colleagues (yes, I have been known to send thank-you cards!) They let you upload your own photo, create your own message, address the card & then they manufacture and laminate it and mail it anywhere in the world for about a dollar a card. I don't know how long the offer will last, but they are giving new sign-ups 5 free cards to try, so give it a go.
LinkShare Affiliate Network
Just in case you have your own web site and are looking for ways to earn an odd penny or two with it, the LinkShare system lets you gather your commissions together into one place for payment to you rather than you having to join dozens of different schemes. Not for everyone, but it costs nothing so it's worth trying.

Fun

User Friendly
My favourite cartoon, a soap opera about a small ISP. Make sure you read some of the archives & not just today's because you'll probably not understand it in isolation.
BookCrossing.Com
Release a book into the wild and see where it travels! This is like the bank-note "Where's George" site but with a purpose.
